Trung Thu holiday
[Edit]
Mid Autumn Festival celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month is one of the most popular festivals in Vietnam. It is closely attached with the legend of Cuoi who is a young man finding a banyan tree with magical healing power. It was forbidden for anyone to desecrate that sacred tree. However, one day, his wife accidentally urinated at its foot, which makes it lift off the ground and take her and Cuoi off together. On this special day every year, it is believed that children parade happily with lanterns underneath the yellow glow of the fullest moon of the year to show Cuoi the way to Earth.
It is not uncommon to see moon cakes and toys flood the market in the Mid Autumn Festival. Moon cakes of various flavors, shapes, sizes and prices displayed in eye-catching red boxes are available through out the country. Besides, toys such as five pointed star-shaped lanterns, masks, drums are also important things for the joyful festive atmosphere.
It would be incomplete without mentioning lion dances performed by small children or by professional groups in the festival. The performances carrying a wish of luck are normally made either on streets or in the house if being accepted by the host.
Mid Autumn Festival is considered as the chance for small children to play, for parents to show love and concern to their kids and for everyone to have a jolly time with the traditional festivities.
