What to bring?

The weather in Sa Pa is rather unpredictable and it could start storming very suddenly. Waterproof jackets or ponchos are a must - though you could pick up disposable ones from the market at 5000 dong (US$0.35).  Bring along a poncho. You can also buy a cheap one in the many shops around.

It gets quite chilly in the evening once the sun sets and the mist descends, so do have enough warm clothes, particularly in the winter months when the temperature can go below freezing. In fact, Sapa is the only place in Vietnam where you can see snow!

For planning to go hiking, you may want to bring along muscle rubs and balms to soothe your aches and pains that will invariably result.

The trails are steep and muddy so you'll need a good pair of hiking boots with good. And reasonably priced rain boots are available. Rubber boots and trekking shoes can be rented from some shops or perhaps at the hotel you are staying in. However, do bear in mind that they have limited sizes.

Except for brief periods in the summer Sa Pa is shrouded in fog and rain for at least part of the day so be prepared so you can enjoy your trip.

Some of the minorities do not wish to have photos taken of them. Ask permission beforehand.

Do buy some items from the ethnic minorities, especially if you have enjoyed a good conversation or received help from them. Though they do charge slightly more than the shops, bear in mind that the majority of them are very poor and depend on tourist money to survive.
